The 6th Asian Museum Curators Conference (AMCC) - Curatorship: From Empire to Republic - was hosted in Delhi and Bangalore from 19th to 22nd of October 2010, marking the first occassion the conference took place in India.

The AMCC has acted as a networking and discussion platform on the topics of museology, curatorial practice, conservation and collection policies. Curatorship: From Empire to Republic, a partnership between IFA and The Japan Foundation, addressed the relationship between curatorial practice and spectatorship in Asia by investigating the politics of how curators today are connecting collections with mainstream, niche and underserved audiences. In addition to examining changing methods of curatorial practice, within both public and private institutions and alternative/independent initiatives, there was a desire to address radical shifts in the role of the curator in recent years - from institutional intellectual to global art superstar. This conceptual focus was developed in collaboration with Annapurna Garimella (Managing Trustee, Art Resources and Teaching Trust, Bangalore) who also acted as conference moderator.

Participants at  the conference commonly expressed the need to free themselves of the constraints of their respective institutions in order to shape meaningful and often riskier exhibitions of their own making.  As Joyce Toh, Curator of the Singapore Art Museum astutely pointed out '... the professional curator at a museum is ostensibly a “double agent”, having to play the role of an independent curator, while representing the institution’s point of view.'

In featuring a wide range of curators from across Asia, and arts practitioners representing a range of backgrounds and expertise, the conference succeeded in offering an overview of a field in constant flux and its culturally specific facets in diverse Asian contexts.

The annual AMCC was initiated by The Japan Foundation in 2006 - previous editions have taken place in Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
